The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has recommended closing 57 cases related to the May 9 unrest, sources in the provincial Law Department confirmed on Thursday.
The Law Department has forwarded the recommendations to the provincial cabinet, which will take the final decision. Officials said that several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers are named in these cases, and convictions could have led to disqualification from office.
According to sources, dozens of May 9 cases have already been resolved across the province. The Advocate General’s Office has prepared a formal recommendation to withdraw the cases. Once the cabinet approves, the state will begin legal procedures to formally drop the cases in court.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Shafeeullah Jan, told Internews that the previous government under Ali Amin Gandapur had also withdrawn some cases with cabinet approval. He added that “these cases were politically and vindictively motivated, and most do not meet the requirements of justice. Baseless and fabricated cases should be closed.”
