Army Chief, UK counterpart discuss to elevate bilateral defence relations

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir held a crucial meeting with his British counterpart, General Sir Patrick Sanders, to deliberate on enhancing bilateral defense relations, as conveyed by the military’s media affairs wing on Wednesday.

The gathering, attended by the UK Army’s Chief of General Staff (CGS) designate, General Sir Roland Walker, saw discussions revolving around matters of mutual professional interest and strategies aimed at further bolstering defense cooperation, as highlighted by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Expressing gratitude to General Sanders for his contributions towards strengthening bilateral military ties, General Munir extended congratulations to General Walker on his nomination as the UK Army’s next CGS, according to the statement.

Earlier, COAS Munir and General Sanders had jointly addressed the inaugural session of the sixth Pakistan-UK Regional Stabilisation Conference at Islamabad’s National Defence University, an event also attended by the UK Army’s CGS-designate, the ISPR disclosed.

This conference serves as a prominent platform for defence and security dialogue between Pakistan and the UK, alternating between the two countries and attracting a notable assembly of subject matter experts, including diplomats, defence officials, intellectuals, and representatives from civil society, as outlined in the statement.

Coinciding with the conference, a delegation comprising 30 members from the UK, led by Standing Joint Force Commander Major General Tom Bateman, has been on a visit to Pakistan from April 29 to May 3, according to ISPR sources.

The conference agenda encompasses discussions on global and regional dynamics and their implications for national security, as well as regional peace and stability, with a broader focus this year extending beyond bilateral concerns to regional issues. Defence officials from both nations are actively participating in the conference, the ISPR emphasized.

In a significant acknowledgment during his visit to Pakistan last year, the UK CGS had lauded the sacrifices made by the Pakistan Army in the fight against terrorism, reaffirming the commitment to collaborative efforts for regional security.
