Lahore crackdown targets beggars at signals

LAHORE (Lord Media): A renewed crackdown on beggars has been launched in Lahore, with Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi issuing directives to divisional SPs, circle officers, and traffic personnel. The orders mandate that no child, woman, elderly person, transgender individual, or person feigning disability should be seen begging at traffic signals. Safe City’s traffic monitoring teams have been instructed to maintain constant communication with field staff.

According to Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, data of arrested beggars is being obtained with the help of NADRA to register FIRs against them. Strict action will also be taken against those tampering with traffic signals at night.

Statistics reveal that in the past two months, action has been taken against 1,855 beggars, including 710 women, 742 men, 209 children, and 204 transgender individuals. During this period, cases were registered against 220 habitual beggars with the assistance of Lahore Police, while 1,439 individuals were handed over to social beggars’ homes, Edhi homes, and children to the Child Protection Bureau.
