DERA ISMAIL KHAN (Lord Media): A significant step in gender inclusion has been made in the tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as a woman has been appointed to the district reconciliation council, or Jirga, in South Waziristan for the first time. According to a notification from the Regional Police Officer, social activist and journalist Razia Mehsud has been included in the 17-member council.
In addition to Razia, Gulshan Bibi has also been appointed to the district reconciliation council in Dera Ismail Khan. The recommendation for Razia Mehsud’s inclusion in the Jirga was made by District Police Officer South Waziristan Upper, Arshad Khan, to incorporate women’s perspectives in the local justice system.
Razia Mehsud stated that she is a daughter of Waziristan and is familiar with tribal customs. Her aim is to ensure justice and basic human rights for marginalized groups, including women.
Local tribal and social circles have praised Razia Mehsud’s inclusion, calling it a historic milestone. This decision provides women in the area with a safe platform to present their issues.
Traditionally, councils have been male-dominated, often overlooking women’s issues. Social leaders believe this move will boost women’s confidence, allowing them to openly participate in conflict resolution.
According to district administration, the decision aims to resolve sensitive disputes more effectively and promote justice, equality, and transparency in the region.
