PESHAWAR (Lord Media): The Peshawar High Court heard a petition filed by the transgender community against alleged police harassment and eviction. Justices Syed Arshad Ali and Inamullah Khan presided over the hearing, where the lawyer representing the transgender individuals informed the court about police harassment and eviction attempts.
The court questioned the government about any legislative measures for the protection of transgender individuals. Additional Advocate General Fazal Mula stated that a report with proposals for shelter homes, an endowment fund, and departmental quotas for transgender persons has been prepared. The court directed the government to submit a response.
During the hearing, transgender individuals claimed that police bring people to their homes, demanding eviction, and do not allow them to reside peacefully. Justice Inamullah Khan remarked that violence against transgender persons tarnishes the province’s reputation, urging the government to take serious protective measures.
Petitioner’s lawyer, Imran Khan Advocate, argued that although the government forms committees for the betterment of transgender persons, they lack representation from the community. The court instructed that future committees must include transgender representation and ordered the government to submit a response by the next hearing.
