PARIS (Lord Media): A trial has begun against French Member of the European Parliament, Rima Hassan, over allegations of supporting terrorism through an anti-Israel social media post. Hassan appeared in a Paris court, defending her post. Outside the court, she described the trial as political revenge, an attempt to silence pro-Palestinian voices, and an attack on freedom of expression.
Hassan warned that censoring political dissenters and initiating criminal cases against them could severely damage democratic values. She emphasized that the issue is not just about supporting or opposing Palestine, but about safeguarding democracy, the rule of law, and freedom of expression in France.
Hassan stated that every citizen should have the right to freely express their opinions on political matters. She was detained in April following the anti-Israel post.
French prosecutors have charged her under laws related to promoting or supporting terrorism, and the trial is ongoing. According to French law, if found guilty, she could face up to seven years in prison and a fine of approximately 125,000 U.S. dollars.
