New KP law imposes penalties for unauthorized assembly reporting

Peshawar (Lord Media): The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has approved an amendment to the Privilege Act, prohibiting the publication or broadcast of the assembly or committee proceedings, questions, resolutions, motions, or adjournment motions before they are officially presented or released.

According to the Act, violators may face imprisonment, fines, or both, depending on the nature of the offense. Publishing a distorted report of assembly proceedings or a member’s speech will result in a penalty of three months imprisonment or a fine of 300,000 rupees.

Publishing prohibited assembly proceedings or committee reports will lead to six months imprisonment, a fine of 1 million rupees, or both.

Publishing defamatory statements against the assembly or its dignity will result in six months imprisonment, a fine of 500,000 rupees, or both. Assaulting an assembly officer or obstructing official duties will be punishable by one month imprisonment or a fine of 100,000 rupees.
