Zurich (Lord Media): FIFA has revoked the one-match suspension of American player Folarin Balogun following intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump. Balogun is now eligible to play in the World Cup pre-quarterfinal against Belgium, sparking new debates in global football.
Balogun received a red card after a VAR review in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina for a dangerous tackle on opponent Tarik Mehmudovic’s ankle. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino had criticized the decision, stating it was not deserving of a red card.
Reports indicate that President Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the decision, leading to FIFA deferring Balogun’s suspension for a one-year probation period under Article 27 of the Code of Conduct, although the red card remains.
FIFA clarified that if Balogun commits another violation during this period, the current suspension will be immediately enforced, and additional penalties may be applied for the new infraction.
Belgium has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, while FIFA has refrained from further comment on the matter.
