Arlington (Lord Media): Egypt secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in extra time at Dallas Stadium on Friday.
Egypt took an early lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour headed in a cross from Karim Hafez. Australia equalized in the 55th minute due to an own goal by Egypt’s Mohamed Hany. Despite several opportunities, neither team scored again in regulation or extra time, leading to penalties.
In the shootout, Egypt successfully converted four spot-kicks, while Australia missed twice, resulting in a 4-2 victory for Egypt. This win marks Egypt’s first-ever advancement to the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup. They will next face the winner of the Argentina-Cape Verde match in the Round of 16.
