UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces resignation amid mounting political pressure

LONDON, June 22 (LORD): British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resignation, bringing an end to a turbulent period in British politics amid growing pressure from within the ruling Labour Party and declining public support.

Starmer’s decision follows days of intense speculation over his political future after a series of electoral setbacks and increasing calls from party members for a change in leadership. The pressure intensified following the recent by-election victory of rival Andy Burnham, which strengthened demands for a leadership transition.

In a statement delivered outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he would begin an orderly transition process to allow the Labour Party to elect a new leader while ensuring continuity in government.

During his announcement about the resignation, the outgoing prime minister got emotinal while mentioning his family’s support for him and his love for them.

His resignation opens the way for a leadership contest within the Labour Party, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham widely viewed as a leading contender to succeed him. Other senior Labour figures are also expected to enter the race in the coming days.

Starmer led Labour to a landslide general election victory in 2024, ending more than a decade of Conservative rule. However, his government later faced mounting challenges, including economic difficulties, declining approval ratings and internal party divisions.

Political analysts say the leadership change comes at a sensitive time for Britain as the country grapples with economic pressures and a rapidly evolving international environment.

The Labour Party is expected to announce details of the leadership selection process shortly. Until a successor is chosen, Starmer is expected to remain in office in a caretaker capacity.

His departure will make him the latest in a series of British prime ministers to leave office before completing a full term, highlighting the political volatility that has characterized British politics over the past decade.
