Iranian president likely to visit Pakistan amid ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations: MOFA

Islamabad (Lord Media): Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will pay a state visit to Pakistan on Tuesday at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, Pezeshkian will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers and senior officials.

During the visit, the Iranian president is scheduled to meet Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and hold talks with Prime Minister Sharif. He will also receive calls from Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The ministry said the visit would be Pezeshkian’s second trip to Pakistan since assuming office as president of Iran.

The two sides are expected to review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and explore ways to further strengthen cooperation in key areas, including trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges and regional connectivity.

The visit will also provide an opportunity for discussions on ongoing diplomatic engagements following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest, the statement said.

Pakistan and Iran share close historical, cultural and religious ties, and the upcoming visit reflects the two countries’ commitment to deepening cooperation and promoting peace, stability and sustainable development in the region, the ministry added.

Ealrier, a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Lord Media that Iranian president is expected to visit Pakistan Tuesday amid significant progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations, with Pakistan and Qatar playing mediatory roles.

According to the official, preparations for the visit are underway, although neither Islamabad nor Tehran has officially confirmed it.

The visit comes at a crucial time in the U.S.-Iran talks, where representatives from Iran and the U.S. agreed on a roadmap for a comprehensive agreement within 60 days at the Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland.

Several confidence-building measures were agreed upon in the negotiations, including the continuation of technical-level talks, the establishment of a high-level committee for political oversight of the mediation process, and the creation of direct communication channels to prevent misunderstandings and ensure the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomatic observers view this anticipated visit as a reflection of Pakistan’s growing role in the negotiations between Tehran and Washington, supporting efforts for regional peace and stability.
