Lahore man acquitted in 41-year-old murder case

Lahore (Lord Media): The Lahore High Court has acquitted Taj Din, who was serving a life sentence in a 41-year-old double murder case, overturning the trial court’s decision. Justice Amjad Rafiq of the High Court accepted Taj Din’s appeal and issued a 14-page written verdict, declaring the prosecution’s evidence insufficient.

According to the verdict, Taj Din was charged with the murder of two individuals, Riazuddin and Akhtar Ali, in Rahim Yar Khan district on October 28, 1985. The trial court had sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2017, and an appeal was filed in the Lahore High Court in 2018.

The court stated that the prosecution failed to prove the allegations against the accused, and the medical evidence was not presented effectively. The absence of the medical officer in court was also deemed detrimental to the prosecution’s case.

Highlighting flaws in the police investigation and evidence, the court noted that the prosecution’s entire case was riddled with doubts. The court emphasized that a conviction cannot be based on mere suspicion, and the benefit of doubt is a legal right of the accused.

The Lahore High Court ordered the immediate release of Taj Din, instructing jail authorities to free him if he is not required in any other case.
