Islamabad (Lord Media): The federal budget for 2026-27 has significantly increased the public transport subsidy for Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The subsidy for the Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services has been raised from last fiscal year’s 3 billion to 7.3 billion rupees.
The additional subsidy will be applied to the Metro Bus Service and Green Electric Bus Service, aiming to enhance the provision of quality and affordable travel facilities for citizens. The Metro Bus Service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad has been successfully operational since 2014, benefiting millions of passengers daily.
According to officials, the plan for the new fiscal year includes introducing Green Electric Buses on twenty more sectors and routes in the twin cities. So far, public transport has been launched on twenty-three routes in the Rawalpindi Division, with Green Electric Buses to be introduced gradually on twenty more routes.
The government states that the number of Green Electric Buses will be gradually increased to expand the public transport system and provide modern travel facilities to citizens.
The Punjab government is also considering allocating a separate transport subsidy for the Rawalpindi Division in its budget to further enhance the public transport system in the region.
