Beijing (Lord Media): China has confirmed the arrest of an American citizen, Man Zan, on charges of espionage and endangering national security. According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Man Zan was detained at Kunming Airport. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that Man Zan is under criminal detention. China has informed the US Consulate General in Guangzhou about the arrest.
Sources indicate that Man Zan was arrested two weeks ago. He is an expert on Myanmar affairs and serves as the executive director of a think tank. Following his arrest, there has been no response from the US State Department or related agencies.
Man Zan was also involved in Myanmar’s 1988 democratic movement and studied at the University of California, Berkeley. He is one of the founders of the think tank that researches Myanmar’s political situation. China has recently supported Myanmar’s new government.
