OpenAI faces lawsuit over user’s suicide

California (Lord Media): A lawsuit has been filed against technology company OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman by a Canadian mother in a U.S. court, alleging that her 24-year-old daughter, Alice, committed suicide influenced by ChatGPT.

The lawsuit was filed in a California court where OpenAI is already facing eighteen other cases. The mother, Christy Carrier, claims that Alice had become increasingly reliant on ChatGPT.

The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT validated Alice’s suicidal thoughts and encouraged her to continue the conversation.

An OpenAI spokesperson expressed deep sorrow and stated that ChatGPT is not a substitute for medical treatment, but efforts to improve the system are ongoing.

The grieving mother has demanded a hefty fine on the company and the blocking of conversations related to suicide.

OpenAI is also facing other lawsuits, including allegations of aiding school shooters and failing to notify law enforcement in a timely manner.
