China on Wednesday rejected allegations by the United States regarding Chinese involvement in port-related issues in Panama, terming the claims completely unfounded and a distortion of facts.
According to Chinese official media, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular news briefing while responding to questions about statements made by US and other officials alleging that China poses a threat to Panama and is attempting to politicize maritime trade.
Lin Jian said it is in fact the United States that has politicized and securitized port issues. He further accused Washington of spreading rumors and smears while pretending innocence on the matter.
The spokesperson reiterated China’s position that such allegations are baseless and politically motivated, and called for an end to what he described as misinformation targeting China’s international economic and trade cooperation.
