AI, big data reshape China’s appeal for international students: report

Emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data and new energy are expanding academic opportunities for international students in China, according to a report released by the Xinhua Institute, affiliated with the Xinhua News Agency.

The report, titled “Study in China: Contributing to the Building of a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity,” highlights how Chinese universities are increasingly aligning academic programmes with industrial and socio-economic needs, offering more practical and career-oriented pathways.

It notes that institutions across China have developed high-demand disciplines at the intersection of technology and development, including programmes tailored to global challenges and regional cooperation frameworks.

Among the new academic offerings are specialised courses such as development economics for emerging economies and Belt and Road studies, reflecting China’s broader engagement with international partnerships.

According to the report, this shift represents a transition from traditional education models to a more targeted approach where students can pursue highly specific fields aligned with industry demand.

Citing student experiences, the report features Marc Yeo Zhi Yii, a student at Tianjin University’s School of Marine Science and Technology, who said China’s emerging engineering education integrates marine science with AI and big data analytics, broadening academic and professional prospects.

He is enrolled in the ASEAN Specialized Undergraduate Class in Marine Technology, a programme designed to meet the maritime development needs of China and ASEAN countries, with a focus on marine resources and environmental governance.

The report concludes that such interdisciplinary academic models are helping to produce a growing pool of specialised professionals while strengthening educational cooperation between China and partner countries.
