Hydropower output hits 6,000MW as electricity demand rises

Electricity demand has increased across Pakistan, while hydropower generation reached 6,000 megawatts during peak hours on the night of April 24, according to the Power Division.

A spokesperson for the Power Division said the rise in hydropower output was driven by increased water releases from Tarbela Dam during nighttime operations.

The country’s total hydropower capacity currently stands at around 11,500MW, indicating that generation levels have significantly improved in recent days.

Officials said the increase in hydropower production helped stabilise the national grid, enabling an additional 100MW to be centralised, while up to 500MW was successfully transmitted from the southern region to the national grid.

Despite higher demand, electricity distribution companies carried out load management ranging from one to two hours during peak nighttime periods. The spokesperson noted that improved hydropower generation helped limit outages to under two hours.

The statement added that load management continues on high-loss feeders under the government’s economic load management policy, clarifying that this mechanism is separate from peak-hour load adjustments.

Meanwhile, around 5,500MW of electricity generation capacity remains offline due to unavailability of liquefied natural gas (LNG) amid global supply constraints.

The Power Division expressed optimism that improved LNG availability and sustained water releases would help eliminate nighttime shortfalls in the coming days.
