The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase in electricity prices under the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) mechanism.
According to the request, electricity tariffs may increase by 26 paisa per unit for March, reflecting adjustments in fuel charges. NEPRA is scheduled to hear the petition on April 28, where the proposal will be reviewed in detail.
The CPPA stated that 8.939 billion units of electricity were generated during March, while 8.644 billion units were supplied to distribution companies (DISCOs). The reference cost for the month was set at Rs 7.99 per unit.
Breakdown of power generation shows a diversified energy mix, with hydropower contributing 23.55 percent, local coal 16.76 percent, and imported coal 13.80 percent. Imported LNG accounted for 5.64 percent, while furnace oil contributed 1.02 percent and local gas 11.34 percent.
Nuclear sources provided 21.95 percent of total electricity generation during the month. Renewable sources also contributed, with wind energy at 3.46 percent and solar at 1.18 percent.
According to the application, the proposed increase will also apply to K-Electric consumers, potentially adding further financial pressure on inflation-hit households already struggling with rising utility costs.
