The cyber crime wing in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has arrested six individuals in connection with the illegal online leak of South Indian star Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, officials said.
Authorities also blocked more than 300 piracy links during the ongoing crackdown, initiated after reports of the film’s HD print being shared unlawfully on digital platforms.
According to Indian media reports, the action was taken following a complaint by VN Productions, which warned of potential financial losses due to the widespread unauthorised distribution of the film.
Officials said that clips and in some cases the full movie were leaked online on April 9, prompting immediate investigations. Special teams were formed to trace those responsible using digital forensic analysis and link tracking.
Preliminary findings revealed that the suspects distributed the film through cloud storage services and shared drive links, enabling large-scale circulation. Police have also recovered key digital evidence from those arrested.
A case has been registered under multiple laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, the Copyright Act and the Cinematograph Act.
The cyber crime wing said efforts are underway to remove additional illegal links, with continuous monitoring of social media and other platforms.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from downloading or sharing pirated content, warning of strict legal action in case of violations.
Meanwhile, the film’s producers have appealed to viewers to delete any unauthorised links. No statement has yet been issued by Vijay, who is currently engaged in political activities.
Jana Nayagan, described as a commercial film with political undertones, is already facing delays in release due to objections raised by the censor board over certain scenes.
