Syria, Jordan sign agreements to boost cooperation across key sectors

Syria and Jordan have signed a series of agreements aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in multiple sectors, according to an official statement issued on Sunday.

The agreements were finalised during the second session of the Syrian-Jordanian Higher Coordination Council held in the Jordanian capital, where senior officials from both sides reviewed areas of mutual interest.

According to Syrian authorities, the two countries agreed to resume natural gas supplies to Syria under a deal signed on January 26, with deliveries expected to restart within two days following completion of technical procedures.

In the economic domain, both sides stressed the need to expand trade and investment ties, announcing new trade facilitation measures to be implemented from May 1 on a reciprocal basis. Officials also underlined the importance of restoring transit trade and improving access to ports to facilitate smoother movement of goods.

In the transport sector, Syria and Jordan reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation across land, air and maritime routes, while simplifying procedures to improve operational flexibility.

Water cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides agreeing to reactivate joint committees to ensure equitable distribution of water resources and address shared challenges such as seasonal shortages and sustainable management.

The two countries also explored avenues to expand collaboration in education, healthcare, agriculture, tourism and institutional development, alongside capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening public sector performance.
