Airstrike on Iraqi military clinic kills seven soldiers in Anbar

Iraq’s Ministry of Defense said a military medical facility in western Anbar province came under an airstrike on Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of seven soldiers and injuries to 13 others.

According to an official statement, the incident took place around 9:00 a.m. local time at the Habbaniyah military clinic and an associated engineering unit under the Habbaniyah site command. The ministry said the strike was followed by additional shelling from an aircraft.

The wounded and deceased personnel were engaged in what the ministry described as national and humanitarian duties at the time of the attack. Rescue operations were ongoing at the site to search for any additional victims.

Iraq’s defense authorities condemned the incident, calling it a “blatant and grave violation” of international laws prohibiting attacks on medical facilities and personnel. The ministry warned that the strike could amount to serious violations under international humanitarian law.

Officials said the attack represents a dangerous escalation and stressed that those responsible must be held accountable. Baghdad also reaffirmed its right to respond through appropriate legal and security measures.

No group has claimed responsibility so far.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following earlier reports of a U.S. airstrike in Anbar that allegedly killed members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces, including a senior commander.

The broader regional situation has remained volatile in recent weeks, with escalating military exchanges involving Iran, Israel, and U.S. forces across parts of the Middle East.
