More than 4.1 million people have been internally displaced across Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, and Pakistan since the recent escalation in the Middle East, a United Nations spokesperson said Thursday.
According to Stephane Dujarric, an additional 117,000 people have fled to other countries, citing data from the UN Refugee Agency.
Dujarric highlighted that the Middle East hosts some of the largest populations in need of humanitarian assistance globally. “The recent escalation risks deepening civilian suffering and causing further damage to already fragile civilian infrastructure,” he said.
The United Nations and its humanitarian partners continue to provide aid to affected populations across the region and remain ready to scale up support in coordination with national authorities where required.
