Pakistan Railways freight earns Rs17 billion in six months

Pakistan Railways’ freight sector has recorded a historic performance by generating Rs17 billion in revenue during the first six months of the current fiscal period, officials said on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways said the freight division continued to post strong earnings despite operational challenges, including strikes. According to the spokesperson, the department earned more than Rs3 billion in revenue in both November and December, reflecting sustained demand for rail-based cargo services.

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi said the organisation expects to generate more than Rs38 billion from the freight sector alone by the end of the ongoing financial year. He added that Pakistan Railways is on track to become a trillion-rupee revenue institution for the first time in its history by 2026.

Sharing future plans, the railways minister assured passengers that all trains would be upgraded by the end of 2026. He said the upgrades would significantly improve passenger comfort, service quality and overall travel experience, while ensuring higher safety standards.

Abbasi also announced that security cameras would be installed in trains in 2026 as part of broader reforms. He said Pakistan Railways would be fully digitised, and the railway police have already received modern training to enhance passenger security during journeys.

Officials say the improved financial performance, particularly in the freight sector, reflects ongoing reforms aimed at increasing efficiency, revenue generation and public confidence in the national rail network.
