Pakistan and Indonesia have signed seven agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering sectors including higher education, health, trade, and anti-drug measures on Tuesday. The agreements were exchanged during a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad, attended by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
According to the officials, the MoUs include cooperation for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, preservation of historical documents and records, prevention of drug smuggling, halal trade and certification, and collaboration in the health sector. Pakistan and Indonesia also signed an agreement in higher education, under which Pakistani students will be eligible for Indonesian government scholarship programs.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed President Subianto to Pakistan and described the discussions as “very positive.” He said the visit would elevate bilateral relations and stressed the historical strength of Pakistan-Indonesia ties, noting the countries’ support for each other during past challenges.
The Prime Minister highlighted discussions on balancing bilateral trade, cooperation in medical and health sectors, and vocational training. He said both countries agreed to send Pakistani doctors, medical professors, and experts to Indonesia to enhance collaboration.
Prime Minister Sharif also expressed concern over developments in Gaza, condemning violations of ceasefire by Israel, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Palestine.
President Subianto thanked Pakistan for the warm reception and said it was an honor to receive a salute from JF-17 Thunder aircraft on entering Pakistani airspace. He welcomed the MoUs signed between the two countries, emphasizing the promotion of cooperation in education, trade, agriculture, technology, and health. He also stated that Pakistan and Indonesia maintained a common stance on the situation in Gaza.
President Subianto’s visit is his first official trip to Pakistan. Upon arrival at the Prime Minister’s House, he was accorded a guard of honor by Pakistan’s armed forces and planted a commemorative tree. During his stay, he will also meet with President Arif Ali Zardri.
