Sindh Assembly approves amendment to Letters and Succession Certificates Bill

The Sindh Assembly has unanimously passed the Sindh Letters and Succession Certificate (Amendment) Bill, changing the procedure for issuing inheritance certificates in the province.

The bill was presented in the assembly by Law Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjhar during a session chaired by Speaker Owais Qadir Shah. Previously, succession certificates were issued by the session judge; under the new law, the certificates will be issued through NADRA, providing a faster and more convenient process for citizens.

During the session, members raised several other issues. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Muhammad Farooq expressed concerns about attempts to grant autonomy to the University of Karachi’s ECCBS, arguing it could limit opportunities for students in chemical and biological research programs.

PTI/Sunni Ittehad Council’s Wajid Hussain highlighted a targeted operation in his constituency by the Karachi Municipal Corporation, which led to the death of an elderly man and alleged extortion of Rs40,000. He urged that enforcement actions against encroachments be applied uniformly.

MQM member Saber Qaim Khani requested expanded bus services in Hyderabad, proposing routes from Gaadi Khata to Gudu Chowk and along the Tando Muhammad Khan road to cover industrial areas. Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon assured the assembly that bus services would be increased across Hyderabad and called for improvements in traffic management, stressing that accountability should be case-specific in road accidents.

Sharjeel Memon also invited assembly members to submit proposals for transport reforms, noting that taxi services are expected to launch next month.

MQM member Rashid Khan congratulated the newly appointed Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying the move strengthens democracy. Some members expressed differing opinions, including Muhammad Farooq, who criticized political narratives linking appointments to democratic stability.

The Sindh Assembly adjourned the session until 3 PM on Monday for further discussion.
