Punjab’s groundwater rapidly depleting

LAHORE (Lord Media): Groundwater reserves in Punjab are rapidly depleting, prompting experts to recommend mandatory recharge wells in every household. Despite monsoon rains, billions of gallons of water are being wasted, causing water levels to drop in cities like Lahore.

Experts have warned that if rainwater is not conserved and reabsorbed into the ground, future generations may face a severe water crisis. Dr. Muhammad Yaseen from Punjab University stated that Lahore’s groundwater level is decreasing by an average of one to one and a half meters annually.

Dr. Yaseen suggested that rainwater could be redirected back into the ground through recharge wells, recharge pits, and underground filtration systems to improve water levels.

Abid Latif Sandhu from the Ravi Urban Development Authority noted that the quality of groundwater is also deteriorating due to industrial waste, domestic sewage, and agricultural chemicals contaminating the water.

WASA Lahore has initiated projects to restore groundwater through recharge wells and rainwater storage. The city currently operates three advanced groundwater recharge wells, with plans to construct 15 more.
