Rights groups urge EU to rethink Taliban engagement

BRUSSELS (Lord Media): Global human rights organizations have warned the European Union about its relations with the Taliban regime. Protests against the Taliban’s hardline policies and human rights violations continue globally, and no country has officially recognized the Taliban government yet.

Human Rights Watch criticized the EU for engaging in talks with the Taliban despite their poor human rights record. The Taliban have suppressed media freedom and arrested opponents and human rights activists.

According to the organization, the Taliban have banned secondary and higher education for women and restricted their employment and movement. The EU’s condemnation of Taliban human rights violations contrasts with its practical engagements.

Denmark’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Kristina Mārks Lārsen, also criticized the Taliban, stating that Afghan women and girls have been excluded from public life and their voices are being silenced.

The criticism from human rights organizations indicates that global institutions are not ready to compromise on the Taliban issue.
