Moscow (Lord Media): Russia has lifted its ban on potato imports from Punjab, allowing 101 Pakistani exporters to resume shipments from July 7. This move is seen as a significant development for Pakistan’s agricultural exports, benefiting farmers and boosting foreign exchange earnings.
According to Pakistan’s trade officer in Moscow, Russian authorities made this decision after reviewing the quarantine and phytosanitary systems provided by Pakistan’s Department of Plant Protection. The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance has informed Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security and Research about this decision.
Russia granted permission for potato imports from Punjab based on Pakistan’s phytosanitary assurances. After reviewing the list of Pakistani exporters and export quantities, Russian authorities cleared 101 companies while maintaining restrictions on two others.
Russian officials reminded that in April, three Pakistani exporters were allowed limited exports. The Pakistani trade mission has requested the Ministry of National Food Security and Research to ensure effective implementation of the Russian decision.
Russia had imposed the ban in May 2025, citing the presence of potato tuber moth and tomato wilt virus in some shipments. Pakistan later provided evidence of pest- and disease-free crops, leading to Russian satisfaction with the Pakistani phytosanitary system.
This year, Pakistan has achieved a record potato production of approximately 12 million tons, with 4 million tons available for export. Experts believe reopening the Russian market will help consume surplus stock, stabilize local market prices, and earn foreign exchange through exports.
