Former EU MP’s phone hacked with Pegasus

Toronto (Lord Media): A Canadian research organization, Citizen Lab, has revealed that Stelios Kouloglou, a former member of the European Parliament, was targeted by the Israeli-made Pegasus spyware. This revelation has raised global concerns about the use of advanced surveillance software.

According to a report by Citizen Lab, the phone of the Greek ex-parliamentarian Stelios Kouloglou was hacked at least three times between October 2022 and March 2023 using Pegasus spyware. This software is distributed by the Israeli company NSO Group.

The report states that at the time of the hacking, Kouloglou was a member of the European Parliament’s PEGA committee, which investigates phone hacking. He expressed surprise that his phone was hacked despite his committee role.

Citizen Lab did not identify the party using Pegasus but suggested it might be linked to incidents involving the surveillance of exiled journalists.

Apple later addressed this security flaw through an update and warned users about potential hacking threats.

The European Parliament stated that they monitor cyberattacks and provide security tools to members.

NSO Group did not respond to requests for comment. The company has faced allegations of illegal surveillance.

The United States blacklisted NSO Group in 2021 over human rights concerns. Meta won a damages lawsuit against NSO.
