Hong Kong offers baby bonus to boost birth rate

Hong Kong (Lord Media): The Hong Kong government has provided a ‘baby bonus’ of 180 million Hong Kong dollars to parents of newborns to increase the city’s birth rate. Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han stated that by May 31, 2026, parents of 71,866 children have received a bonus of 20,000 Hong Kong dollars.

This scheme was launched in October 2023 by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, aiming to improve the city’s low birth rate. Although the scheme is set to end in October, the government is conducting a detailed review.

Chris Sun also announced new tax incentives to further encourage childbirth. These incentives include extending the claim period for additional child allowance for newborns and increasing the allowance to 140,000 Hong Kong dollars.
