Kabul (Lord Media): Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, there has been a troubling increase in the exile of journalists. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), since 2021, 677 Afghan journalists have been forced to seek refuge in 28 different countries.
The organization’s data reveals that 183 journalists left the country in 2022, while 82 departed in 2025. RSF states that due to pressure and restrictions from the Taliban government, journalists have no choice but to abandon journalism or go into exile.
Célia Mercier, head of Reporters Without Borders’ South Asia desk, said that Afghan media is suffering from systematic repression and severe restrictions, with increasing control by authorities.
Observers noted that in the current situation, Afghan journalists are paying the price for speaking the truth and reporting facts, facing silence, imprisonment, or exile.
