Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday announced that the United States and Iran had electronically signed the historic “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU), marking a major diplomatic breakthrough aimed at resolving the conflict between the two countries through dialogue and negotiation.
In a statement shared on X, the prime minister said the memorandum was signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by him as mediator, reflecting the commitment of both sides to a peaceful and diplomatic resolution of their differences.
Sharif said the agreement entered into force with immediate effect. As part of the first phase of implementation, Iran will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States will lift the naval blockade.
“The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” the prime minister said.
He congratulated U.S. President Donald J. Trump for his commitment to diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution, saying his efforts helped avert a conflict that could have had devastating consequences for the region and beyond.
The prime minister also acknowledged the contributions of the U.S. negotiating team, including J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, for their role in helping achieve the agreement.
Sharif expressed appreciation to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, praising their leadership and commitment to peace. He also commended Iranian negotiators Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi and Eskandar Momeni for their patience and constructive engagement throughout the process.
The prime minister further recognized the role played by regional countries in facilitating the peace efforts. He thanked the leadership of Qatar for its constructive engagement and praised Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt for their contributions toward achieving the breakthrough.
Sharif also paid tribute to Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, saying his tireless efforts and dedication were instrumental in facilitating the agreement and advancing regional peace and stability.
Expressing optimism about the future, the prime minister said the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding should serve as an enduring foundation for greater understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity across the region. LORD
