China has once again expressed strong opposition to United States arms sales to Taiwan, reaffirming its long-standing position on the sensitive issue, According to the Chinese state media.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular press briefing on Tuesday that China’s stance on U.S. arms sales to Taiwan is “consistent and clear,” stressing that the issue remains a core concern in China-U.S. relations.
Responding to media queries on bilateral ties and the Taiwan question, Guo reiterated Beijing’s objection to any military cooperation between Washington and what China considers its breakaway region.
The remarks came ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming state visit to China scheduled from May 13 to 15, during which he is expected to hold in-depth discussions with Chinese leadership on major issues concerning bilateral relations as well as global peace and development.
Guo said the Taiwan issue remains a key subject in China-U.S. engagements and emphasized that China will continue to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The spokesperson added that the upcoming high-level talks between the two countries will also cover broader global and regional concerns in addition to bilateral relations.
