Xi Jinping invites Trump for high-level China–US summit from May 13

China has confirmed that Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump will hold detailed discussions on major bilateral and global issues during an upcoming state visit scheduled from May 13 to 15, marking a rare diplomatic engagement between the two powers amid shifting global dynamics.

According to China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, the two leaders are expected to exchange views on China–U.S. relations as well as broader concerns related to international peace and development. The remarks were made during a regular press briefing held in Beijing on Monday.

The visit will be the first by a sitting U.S. president to China in nine years, signaling what analysts describe as a potential attempt to stabilize one of the world’s most consequential yet strained relationships.

Guo emphasized that head-of-state diplomacy plays a “critical and irreplaceable strategic guiding role” in shaping ties between Beijing and Washington. He noted that both sides are willing to engage on the basis of “equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit” to expand areas of cooperation while managing longstanding differences.

“China stands ready to work with the United States to inject more stability and certainty into a turbulent and changing world,” Guo said, reflecting Beijing’s broader messaging on global governance and economic cooperation.

The upcoming talks follow the last in-person meeting between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump held in October 2025 in Busan, Republic of Korea, where both sides discussed trade tensions, security concerns, and regional stability in Asia-Pacific.

Diplomatic observers say the upcoming meeting could cover sensitive issues including trade imbalances, technological competition, regional security flashpoints, and climate cooperation, although official agendas have not yet been publicly disclosed.

The announcement comes at a time when global geopolitical tensions remain high, with multiple conflict zones and economic uncertainties influencing international relations.
