ASEAN reviews energy security amid Middle East tensions

The Philippines, serving as this year’s chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, has convened senior officials to assess the impact of escalating developments in the Middle East on global and regional energy markets.

According to the Philippines’ Department of Energy, the virtual meeting held on Friday brought together ASEAN member states and dialogue partners to review oil and gas supply conditions amid rising concerns over price volatility and possible supply chain disruptions.

Officials discussed cooperation in areas including energy supply diversification, improved access to resources, market transparency and coordinated emergency response mechanisms.

Technical briefings highlighted ongoing constraints in key global supply routes and shifts in international trade flows, which are affecting energy security across the region.

Participants stressed the importance of strengthening monitoring systems, improving data sharing, and developing strategic stockpiling and emergency reserve frameworks tailored to national circumstances.

In a separate statement, ASEAN said member states underscored the urgency of enhancing collective preparedness and reinforcing regional solidarity to manage emerging risks in the energy sector.

The discussions come as geopolitical tensions continue to influence global oil markets, prompting energy-importing regions to reassess resilience strategies and supply stability measures.
