China criticises unilateral US trade measures

China’s Ministry of Commerce has described the United States’ decision to refund certain tariffs as a “helpful step” toward correcting what it called previous policy mistakes.

According to a statement issued during a regular press briefing, spokesperson He Yongqian responded to recent actions by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which began processing tariff refunds on April 20.

The spokesperson reiterated that China has consistently opposed unilateral tariff measures, saying such policies violate international trade rules and undermine the global economic order.

She added that measures such as reciprocal tariffs and fentanyl-related tariffs not only breach international trade norms but also conflict with U.S. domestic laws, ultimately harming global commerce and serving no party’s interest.

The statement further noted that these tariffs were initially collected from U.S. importers and were ultimately passed on to American consumers.

Chinese authorities also advised export-oriented enterprises to maintain communication with relevant stakeholders and safeguard their legitimate interests in light of evolving trade conditions.
