María Corina Machado wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her democratic struggle in Venezuela

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her unwavering commitment to democracy and her peaceful struggle against authoritarian rule in Venezuela, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.

The committee praised Machado for her persistent efforts to defend democratic rights, promote political freedoms, and unite Venezuela’s opposition under a peaceful vision of change. Her leadership, it said, represents “a courageous and principled stand for democracy in the face of oppression.”

Machado has remained in Venezuela despite facing severe political pressure, intimidation, and legal restrictions imposed by President Nicolás Maduro’s government. She was barred from participating in the July 2024 presidential elections, which were marred by allegations of fraud and international criticism over human rights abuses.

Reacting to the announcement, Machado said she was “in shock” but deeply honoured by the recognition, calling it a tribute to the Venezuelan people’s resilience and their continued fight for freedom. Supporters and democracy advocates around the world hailed the award as a powerful acknowledgment of her courage and dedication.

The Nobel Committee also highlighted the personal risks she faced, including threats to her safety and repeated violations of her political rights. Despite these challenges, Machado has continued to serve as a leading voice for peaceful reform and democratic transition.

This year’s decision surprised many observers who expected the Peace Prize to recognize diplomatic efforts or conflict mediation. With this honour, María Corina Machado becomes the 20th woman in history to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
