Mumbai (Lord Media): Torrential rains in Mumbai have wreaked havoc, resulting in the deaths of 15 people. The severe monsoon rains paralyzed life in Maharashtra on Monday, with fatalities occurring over the past three to four days due to various incidents.
According to Indian authorities, a landslide in Pune district buried a house under debris, killing two members of the same family. Another person in the district was swept away by floodwaters.
Continuous rain and strong winds have disrupted normal life in Mumbai and Pune. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region recorded 200 to 250 millimeters of rainfall, affecting traffic and daily activities.
State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the average rainfall for the entire month of July occurred in just four days. Lonavala near Mumbai recorded 625 millimeters, while Tamhini Ghat in Pune saw 589 millimeters of rain.
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, forecasting more rain. Landslides on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway have affected traffic.
Due to the heavy rains, over a thousand people have been relocated to safer areas from various districts including Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Pune. NDRF and SDRF teams remain on alert.
