Islamabad (Lord Media): Pakistan has quietly initiated efforts to mediate between Libya’s two major rival governments, potentially boosting its diplomatic standing, according to a British news agency.
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has been embroiled in civil war, divided between the eastern and western regions. The western region hosts the UN-recognized government, while the eastern part is under Khalifa Haftar’s command.
According to the news agency, Pakistan’s mediation efforts are strongly supported by the United States and Saudi Arabia. Pakistani sources reveal that both Libyan factions requested Pakistan’s intervention.
Previously, Pakistan has played a mediating role between the United States and Iran. The report indicates that these peace efforts began late last year.
The plan proposes the establishment of an interim government in Libya for the next three years, with Abdul Hamid Dbeibah as Prime Minister and Saddam Haftar as Chairman of the Presidential Council. Khalifa Haftar’s group will retain control over budgetary matters due to their hold on oil wells.
