The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has officially announced the division of Swat district into two parts, following a decision made by the provincial cabinet.
According to a statement from the provincial administration, the headquarters of Upper Swat will be in Matta, while the headquarters of Swat district will be in Babozai Tehsil, with Gul Kadeh serving as its administrative center.
Upper Swat will comprise the tehsils of Matta, Bahrain, and Khwazakhela, while Swat district will include Babozai, Kabal, Charbagh, and Birkot tehsils.
The cabinet approved the division during its 43rd meeting on December 19, 2025. With this move, the total number of districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has increased to 40.
