Switzerland tests solar panels on railway tracks

Switzerland (Lord Media): Solar panels, typically used on rooftops for electricity generation, have been innovatively applied to railway tracks in Switzerland. In the Buttes region, Sun-Ways company initiated this unique experiment in April 2025 on a 100-meter-long railway track.

A total of 48 photovoltaic panels have been installed, capable of generating 18 kilowatts of electricity. These panels are designed for easy removal, allowing for maintenance work on the tracks as needed.

Since their installation in May 2025, over 16,000 kilowatts of electricity have been produced, meeting the annual power needs of several homes.

Sun-Ways plans to continue this experiment until 2028. According to the company, solar panels on a one-kilometer track could generate 200 megawatts of electricity, sufficient for 60 homes.

The project has yielded positive results, with passing trains aiding in panel cleaning. Other countries are showing interest in this technique, with France partnering with Sun-Ways.
