Air pollution linked to rising male infertility

City (Lord Media): A recent U.S. study has identified air pollution as a significant factor contributing to the increase in male infertility. Research from the University of Massachusetts reveals that air pollution negatively impacts men’s genes, affecting the formation of healthy sperm.

According to the study, men exposed to air pollution experience chemical changes in their DNA, disrupting gene functions. The World Health Organization reports that 17.5% of the global adult population faces infertility at some point, based on over 100 research reports from 1990 to 2021. Infertility rates are 17.8% in wealthy countries and 16.5% in middle and low-income nations.

The study examined over 2,000 men, finding that pollutants like ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide cause 39 DNA changes, increasing infertility risk.

Previous research published in the British Medical Journal also linked air pollution to infertility risks, associating traffic noise with infertility in women over 35. Researchers emphasize the need for further studies to better understand the relationship between air pollution and infertility.
