ISLAMABAD, June 21 (Internews): The Government of Pakistan has formally recommended former U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his pivotal diplomatic role in defusing the recent crisis between Pakistan and India.
In an official statement released Saturday, Pakistani authorities praised President Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” during a period of heightened tensions following what Islamabad described as “unprovoked and unlawful Indian aggression.”
The military confrontation, which Pakistan said resulted in civilian casualties, prompted the launch of Operation “Bunyanum Marsoos”—a targeted countermeasure intended to restore deterrence and uphold national sovereignty.
According to the statement, Trump engaged in urgent diplomatic outreach to both Islamabad and New Delhi, which led to a ceasefire and prevented the escalation of hostilities into a full-scale conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations. Pakistani officials said this intervention helped avert “catastrophic consequences for millions” in the region.
The Government of Pakistan also commended Trump for his “sincere and repeated offers” to help mediate the long-standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which it described as the root cause of regional instability. Lasting peace in South Asia, the statement emphasized, depends on the implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions on the Kashmir issue.
Pakistan’s nomination further highlighted Trump’s broader foreign policy legacy, including what it called “pragmatic diplomacy and effective peace-building.” Islamabad expressed hope that Trump would continue his peacemaking efforts in other global crises, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza and rising tensions involving Iran.
This marks a rare instance of a South Asian government publicly endorsing a former U.S. leader for the Nobel Peace Prize. The statement underscores Islamabad’s view of Trump as a key figure in international diplomacy during one of the region’s most volatile moments in recent years.
