JUI-F Senator claims Nawaz Sharif backed Achakzai’s appointment

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Senator Kamran Murtaza has claimed that Mahmood Khan Achakzai was appointed opposition leader at the behest of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

According to sources, Senator Kamran Murtaza said the appointment of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as opposition leader was made following direct contact between Achakzai and Nawaz Sharif. He alleged that Nawaz Sharif played a decisive role in ensuring the issuance of the notification.

The senator said Nawaz Sharif used the move to “vent his frustration,” adding that the decision could lay the foundation for a broader Charter of Democracy in the coming days.

Kamran Murtaza further stated that Mahmood Khan Achakzai is also the opposition leader for JUI-F, noting that his party had formally demanded Achakzai’s appointment to the position.

Responding to a journalist’s question, he said the matter had been pending for some time and was eventually completed by Nawaz Sharif. He added that whether it was a recommendation or a direct order should be clarified by Nawaz Sharif or Mahmood Khan Achakzai himself.

The JUI-F senator also called for the appointment of an opposition leader in the Senate, similar to the National Assembly, to ensure proper parliamentary functioning.
