PMD issues drought advisory for Balochistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a pre-alert advisory warning of an intensifying drought across several districts of Balochistan, following a significant reduction in rainfall over the past six months.

According to the advisory, western and south-western Balochistan have recorded a sharp decline in precipitation between May and November 2025, leading to a prolonged stretch of dry days. Officials cautioned that the lack of rainfall is likely to exacerbate drought conditions in the coming months.

The report notes that temperature levels are expected to remain above normal, while rainfall is projected to stay below average until February 2026, raising concerns over water shortages and deteriorating agricultural and grazing conditions.

PMD officials said the persistent dry weather may severely impact communities dependent on groundwater and seasonal rains, urging authorities to prepare mitigation measures in vulnerable areas.

The districts currently identified as drought-affected include Chagai, Gwadar, Kech, Kharan, Mastung, Nushki, Pishin, Panjgur, Qila Abdullah, Quetta, and Washuk.
