ISLAMABAD: The Women in Nuclear Pakistan Chapter (WiN-Pakistan), in collaboration with the Pakistan Nuclear Society (PNS) and the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, organized a one-day seminar titled “Knowledge Sharing with Women in Nuclear Safety and Nuclear Security.” The seminar, aimed at fostering information exchange and promoting awareness of nuclear safety and security, saw the participation of around a hundred female officers.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ansar Parvez HI, former Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. Shazia Fatima, President of WiN-Pakistan Chapter, highlighted the chapter’s activities on both national and international levels, acknowledging the support of the Pakistan Nuclear Society, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, and Pakistan Science Foundation.
The seminar comprised two main sessions: a plenary session and a technical session. The plenary session featured senior female officers sharing their career experiences in nuclear safety and security. The technical session focused on human resource and professional development for women in nuclear fields, gender inclusion in organizational setups, and the role of women in safety assessments. The discussions also addressed the existing and future challenges in nuclear safety and security and explored opportunities for women in these areas.
Globally, there are 57 country chapters of Women in Nuclear, which advocate for gender diversity, balance in organizational setups, climate change mitigation, and addressing energy crises. Pakistan has been participating in WiN Global activities since 1992, with the formal structure of the WiN-Pakistan Chapter established through an election by the Pakistan Nuclear Society in July 2023. Within a year, WiN-Pakistan has gained recognition both nationally and internationally and aims to strengthen ties with WiN-IAEA and WiN-Global.
WiN-Pakistan outlined several initiatives during the seminar, including outreach to women in remote nuclear sectors, building stronger relations with other chapters globally, conducting sessions on specific topics such as nuclear medicine and management, initiating mentorship programs, and including non-technical members in the chapter.
