New, cute police officer in China

A unique addition has been made to the police force in the eastern Chinese city of Weifang, Shandong, as a new member completes training and steps into duty, reported Xinhua. Surprisingly, this newcomer is not your typical recruit but a dog named Fu Zai, making headlines as the first corgi to join the police ranks.

Fu Zai’s induction aims to challenge stereotypes surrounding his breed, particularly the notion that corgis with their short legs cannot fulfill police duties. However, this six-month-old pup is proving otherwise, captivating global attention with his remarkable ability to detect explosives.

Described in the China Daily as a “reserve police dog,” Fu Zai has been undergoing rigorous training since the tender age of two months. His daily routine includes obedience exercises, bomb searches, and scent tracking, showcasing his dedication and aptitude for police work.

Wang Yanan, head of the police dog base at the Weifang public security bureau, emphasized Fu Zai’s exceptional qualities, citing his adaptability to various environments, keen sense of smell, and food-driven motivation as assets for training.

Despite his diminutive stature, Fu Zai’s short height proves advantageous in identifying objects hidden beneath vehicles and navigating narrow spaces, enhancing the efficiency of police operations. Moreover, his endearing appearance fosters positive interactions between law enforcement and the public.

Wang emphasized the professionalism behind Fu Zai’s training, highlighting the efforts invested by trainers to hone his skills. While Fu Zai awaits further drills before officially commencing his duties, his journey symbolizes the dedication of law enforcement to adapt and innovate in ensuring public safety.
