Pakistan becomes world’s third-largest rice exporter

Pakistan is moving rapidly toward global leadership in agricultural exports, driven by strong and sustained growth in rice shipments, according to official data and international media reports.

International media reports have also confirmed the growing global acceptance of Pakistani rice, underscoring its rising demand and competitiveness in international markets.
At the start of 2026, Pakistan achieved a major milestone by becoming the world’s third-largest rice exporter. In December 2025 alone, rice exports recorded a 14 percent month-on-month increase, reflecting strong performance in the global market.

Basmati rice played a central role in this success, with exports rising by more than 50 percent. During December 2025, Pakistan exported around 489,000 tonnes of rice, surpassing Vietnam’s exports of approximately 387,000 tonnes for the same period.

Following this performance, Pakistan overtook Vietnam to secure third position in the global rice export rankings. Major destinations for Pakistani rice included the United Arab Emirates, China, Tanzania, Kenya and Ivory Coast.

Industry experts say the international reputation of Pakistani Basmati rice, combined with competitive pricing, has further strengthened buyer confidence. The consistent rise in exports is being viewed as a clear indicator of effective agricultural reforms, growing trust in Pakistan’s produce and a positive direction for the national economy.
