Roger Allers, co-director of Disney’s “The Lion King,” dies at 76

Roger Allers, the acclaimed writer, director, and co-creator of Disney’s iconic animated film The Lion King, has passed away at the age of 76. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Disney Animation’s golden era, which shaped the memories of generations of children and adults worldwide, according to foreign media.

Allers’ passing was confirmed by his longtime friend and visual effects supervisor Dave Bossert, who shared an emotional message on Facebook. Bossert said he had been in contact with Allers just days before his death, making the news “sudden and unbelievable.” He described Allers as “an extraordinary talent and a strong pillar of Disney Animation’s golden age.”

Allers gained global recognition for co-directing The Lion King in 1994 alongside Rob Minkoff. The film featured voices by Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, and James Earl Jones and earned $771 million during its initial release, securing its place as one of the most celebrated animated films in history. Its popularity continued with the 2019 remake, which became one of the highest-grossing films worldwide, generating more than $1.6 billion globally.

Beyond The Lion King, Allers directed the 2006 animated film Open Season and created the emotionally resonant project The Little Match Girl, which earned an Academy Award nomination and highlighted his sensitive and compelling storytelling style.

Allers’ contributions to animation and film have left a lasting legacy, influencing storytellers and animators around the world. Disney has also announced plans for a sequel to The Lion King, ensuring that his work will continue to inspire new audiences.
